Treatment of Macular Edema and Vitreous Hemorrhage | Dr. Mahmoud Hassan

Several conditions can lead to macular edema, which affects the central part of the retina responsible for fine detail vision. The presence of this edema may result in blurred vision, distorted lines, or dark spots that become particularly evident during reading.

Most Common Causes of Macular Edema

• Diabetic Retinopathy.
• Retinal Vein Occlusion.
• Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
• Posterior Uveitis.
• Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR).
• Post-Cataract surgery inflammation.

Advanced Treatment: Retinal Injections (Eye Injections)

Retinal injections are currently among the most advanced and effective techniques for controlling edema. Medications known as Anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors) are injected into the vitreous body to manage complications. This procedure is considered safe and highly effective for many patients.

Common Types of Injections

• Ranibizumab (Lucentis).
• Aflibercept (Eylea).
• Faricimab (Vabysmo).
• Corticosteroid injections and long-acting corticosteroid implants (Ozurdex).

Retinal Injection Prices in Egypt

The cost of retinal injections for diabetic patients ranges from 7,000 to 12,000 EGP, while the cost for long-acting corticosteroid implants (Ozurdex) is approximately 27,000 EGP.

Vitreous Hemorrhage: Causes and Treatment

Vitreous hemorrhage occurs when blood leaks into the clear gel (vitreous) that fills the eye, blocking light from reaching the retina and causing vision loss. While the blood may be absorbed naturally, if there is no improvement or if a retinal detachment is present, a Vitrectomy becomes the optimal solution to restore vision.
