Macular degeneration (الضمور البقعي), or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a condition that primarily affects older adults but can begin earlier, in the early fifties.
This disease has a strong genetic component and is more prevalent in women than in men.
Macular degeneration refers to the deterioration of the macula (البقعة الصفراء), the central part of the retina (الشبكية) responsible for detailed vision. This can involve the accumulation of fatty deposits or the development of abnormal choroidal blood vessels in the macula.
The macula is a part of the retina responsible for seeing fine details. Symptoms may include difficulty recognizing faces or shapes, distorted vision, problems with reading, or the appearance of fixed dark spots in the field of vision.
In many cases, the ophthalmologist may simply monitor the condition using optical coherence tomography (OCT (التصوير المقطعي للشبكية)) and OCT angiography to assess the retinal tissue's health.
In some cases, starting certain vitamin supplements is important, as research has shown that specific types of vitamins and minerals can help slow the disease's progression.
If abnormal blood vessel growth is present, immediate intervention with therapeutic injections is necessary. These ANTI-VEGF (مضاد عوامل النمو) intra-vitreal injections prevent the growth of these abnormal blood vessels, help them recede, and reduce the associated macular edema.
