1. Vitreous Hemorrhage
One of the most dangerous complications of diabetic retinopathy is vitreous hemorrhage. This occurs when new, weak, and abnormal blood vessels (called neovascularization) grow on the surface of the retina or in other areas of the eye. These vessels are very fragile and can rupture easily, leading to blood leakage into the vitreous body, the jelly-like substance that fills the eyeball.
